Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs
First things first… why is having a purpose driven business great for you as the business owner. I could go on for days about this but to keep this video under 10 mins I’m just going to highlight one key reason and it has to do with your psychology.
Abraham Maslow was a behavioural psychologist and in his famous hierarchy of needs model he shared that as humans we have a “need” for self-actualization just like we have needs for things like food, safety, water, and belonging. It’s that real.
Self-actualization is the desire to feel like we are living into our potential.
This is really important to understand because you can have everything else in the world; material success, a great social network, health, but if you don’t feel as if you are contributing and living into your highest potential you will not feel fulfilled as a human being.
So, if this is the case, which from my experience it is, having a business that allows you to contribute in a big way to the things that matter to you most and live into your fullest potential is actually important to your overall well-being.
One important thing to note is, is self-actualization is at the top of the pyramid. Often people try to jump right to the top without building a strong foundation. This never works. You need to have a solid foundation in order to truly self-actualize and do the work that’s needed to be done at this level.

People Don’t Buy What You Do They Buy Why You Do It
Beyond creating a purpose driven business for your own sense of well-being and fulfillment creating a purpose driven business is really important for your businesses wellbeing as well.
Simon Sinek, in his viral TedTalk popularized this notion, that people don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it. However, the majority of businesses don’t share or even know their why. They know what they do, they might even know how they do it (their unique selling proposition) but their why isn’t clear.
This is your mission on your one page business plan. To help you uncover your why, if you aren’t already clear, ask yourself the simple question, “why do I do what I do?”. The trick here is to make sure you don’t stop at your first answer. Continue to ask yourself this same question at least five times to get to the core of your why.
Your Impact Beyond Your Immediate Circle
Once you understand the why of your business you can start to look for how that why can have a bigger impact, a bigger ripple effect. How can you leverage your business as a platform to create change in the world and have an impact on the things that matter to you most? How can you be a real contribution to others through your work?
These are some deep and important questions to consider. To help, try answering these questions by using the Hedgehog Model and finding the intersection point of these three questions:
- What is a problem that you see and are passionate about having an impact on?
- Which of your values are represented in this?
- How can you use your strengths, the things that energize you, to work on this problem?
That sweet spot, the intersection of these three questions, is your area of impact. The place where you can use your unique strengths and gifts to be a contribution to the world through your work.
- Having an impact and contributing outside of your immediate circle is a must in order to self-actualize and live into your full potential.
- People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.
